The women of the American Revolution have been overlooked for too long. This tour celebrates the bold, brilliant, and often forgotten women of Philadelphia who helped change the course of the war and the nation. Betsy Ross, Deborah Read Franklin, Dolley Todd, Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson, Esther de Berdt Reed, Peggy Shippen — their stories come to life in the city where they lived.
What You’ll See
- National Constitution Center — A national museum dedicated to the Constitution — and a starting point for the women who fought to shape it.
- Free Quaker Meetinghouse — Learn about the Quakers and hear how Betsy Ross worshipped here at the Free Quaker Meeting House (c. 1783).
- Christ Church Burial Ground — Pause at the grave of Deborah Franklin, Benjamin Franklin's formidable wife, and learn about her strength and her challenges.
- Elfreth's Alley — A National Historic Landmark and the oldest continuously inhabited street in America. The women who lived here were its backbone.
- Betsy Ross House — Did Betsy Ross really sew the first American flag? This is her story.
- Historic Christ Church — A remarkable surviving landmark from the Revolution. Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson was a patriot who defied her loyalist husband to stay and champion an emerging country.
- Carpenters' Hall — Hear about the mother-daughter duo who safeguarded this national icon for almost three decades.
- Franklin Court — Once home to Deborah and Ben Franklin. Hear how Deborah fought off an attacking mob.
- Dolley Todd House — The site where future First Lady Dolley Madison endured devastating loss and found resilience.
- Independence Hall — The Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were voted into life here, but supported by the influence and sacrifice of women.
