Designed for adults over 50 who prefer a smaller, more intimate experience, this tour caps at just 12 participants. You'll have time to ask every question you want and be close enough to hear the guide. Walk roughly half a mile on flat terrain through the heart of Old City Philadelphia, visiting the same streets where Ben Franklin, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Commodore Barry shaped the nation. One cobblestone street and one step at the President's House are the only physical challenges. The tour runs rain or shine.
What You’ll See
- Independence Visitors Center — Your meeting place. Gather outside the main steps of the Visitors Center at 599 Market Street and check in with your guide 15 minutes before the tour.
- The President's House — Presidents George Washington and John Adams both lived here when Philadelphia was the capital of the United States. Originally a privately-owned mansion (c. 1767), hear about the Pennsylvania "royalty" who lived here, the invasion of Philadelphia, and the site's treasonous activity.
- Liberty Bell Center — An iconic symbol of American freedom. View this historic bell from the outside and hear about its long history.
- Congress Hall — Congress Hall (c. 1789) served as the very first United States Capitol, where the federal government convened from 1790 to 1800.
- Independence Hall — The United States was born here. The U.S. Constitution was created here. Independence Hall (c. 1733) was the Pennsylvania State House for more than forty years before America separated from Britain in 1776.
- First U.S. Supreme Court & Old City Hall — The newly formed United States Supreme Court convened here when Philadelphia was the temporary capital of the nation. President George Washington chose the first justices, including Alexander Hamilton.
- American Philosophical Society — A carved figure of Benjamin Franklin occupies the center façade of this building, a fitting tribute to the man who founded the oldest learning society in the U.S.
- Commodore John Barry Statue — Learn about the Father of the U.S. Navy and his extraordinary exploits at sea during the American Revolution.
- The Second Bank of the United States — A fine example of Greek Revival architecture (c. 1824), this building was once a financial hub for the nation.
- Robert Morris Statue — Admire the forgotten Founding Father. Robert Morris: patriot, statesman, financier, and leader of the Revolution. Today barely anyone knows who he was.
- Carpenters' Hall — The site of the First Continental Congress and the colonies' first step toward independence. Delegates from twelve colonies gathered here in 1774.
- Dolley Todd House — The site where future First Lady Dolley Madison endured loss and found resilience.
- Merchants Exchange — Once the commercial and financial center of Philadelphia. Admire William Strickland's nearly 200-year-old Greek Revival masterpiece.
